If you are a Biology or Microbiology major who wants to add an upper-level lab to your Fall 2019 schedule: There are two modern and highly useful Microbiology labs with plenty of open seats.
Even if you don’t have the prerequisites, you may contact the instructor and ask if this course might be appropriate for you! The instructor will discuss your background and specific circumstances with you, before deciding whether or not to waive the prerequisites.
- BIOL-M 465 Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (3 cr.) P: BIOL-M 250, BIOL-M 255, or BIOL-M 315; or consent of instructor Irene Newton. Scientific inquiry-driven research in environmental microbiology. Focus on the diversity and function of environmental microbes and methods used to study them. In Fall 2019, BIOL-M 465 provides COLL Intensive Writing credit!

BIOL-M 485 Microbial and Molecular Genetics Laboratory (3 cr.) P: P: BIOL-M 250; and BIOL-M 255 or BIOL-M 315; or consent of instructor Ankur Dalia. Provides insight into how science is conducted in a modern research lab. Conduct hypothesis driven molecular and genetic experiments using an attenuated medically relevant bacterial pathogen. Techniques / skills: DNA isolation, PCR, recombinant DNA techniques, gel electrophoresis, transposon mutagenesis, transformation, and quantitative bacterial culture.
