The College of Arts & Sciences is accepting applications for the Exchange Program at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) for the Fall 2018 and Academic Year 2018-2019.
We are going to open SKKU applications on Monday, the 19th, and close them on March 9.
SKKU is a well-regarded university that offers excellent support for visiting exchange students. SKKU offers a variety of courses taught in English, but some courses in Korean are available to exchange students. Since this is an IU exchange, students that the College nominates pay their regular IU tuition. In addition, nominated students may apply for funds from the College to support their travel. There will be an additional scholarship opportunity available through the Institute for Korean Studies.
ELIGIBILITY
In order to be eligible, students must:
– Be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the College of Arts and Sciences.
– Have completed a minimum of one year at IU prior to enrolling at SKKU.
– Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
– Complete an essay and provide two letters of recommendation.
– Have a passport by the time applications are due to SKKU
DEADLINE
Student applications must be received by 11:59 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2018. Applications will be reviewed by the College and selected students are then nominated to SKKU. Accepted students will be notified to complete an online application through SKKU.
PROCEDURES
Students interested in the program should do the following:
- Carefully read the information here before submitting an application. Students should NOT contact SKKU directly until after they are nominated by the College.
- Arrange for two (2) letters of recommendation from professors or others who can speak to your academic qualifications, maturity, and preparedness for an international exchange, as well as any other qualities regarding your suitability and interest in the SKKU program. Recommendation letters should be sent directly from the recommender to the College’s Office of International Affairs (OIA), collOIA@indiana.edu, by 11:59 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2018.
- Write a personal statement that is no longer than two pages, double-spaced, explaining why you would like to take part in the exchange. Be persuasive. The statement should include information about academic studies thus far at IU and what you plan to study at SKKU. The statement should also address why you would like to study in South Korea, such as any interest in the language, culture, or other opportunities there. Be sure your name is at the top of the personal statement.
- Complete the College’s Application for the exchange, attaching your personal statement to the online application form.
- Students will then be contacted to schedule an in-person interview. OIA will contact applicants after the interview process to notify them whether they have been selected, so please check your email frequently.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
– Students are encouraged to submit application materials before the deadline. The deadline is firm.
– The College will convene a committee after interviews are conducted to review applications, assessing each one on the academic suitability for the program as well as an indicated ability to adapt to living and studying abroad. To promote opportunities for cross-cultural experiences, preference will be extended to those students who are not Korean nationals or have not previously spent a significant amount of time in South Korea.
– Students who are nominated will be instructed to consult with their Academic Advisor(s) to ensure consistent academic progress. Because this is new exchange, the College does not have a database of IU-SKKU equivalent courses. Students will need to have their SKKU transcripts and syllabi evaluated by IU faculty in order for IU equivalencies to be processed.
– Students selected for the exchange will pay their regular IU tuition, and will be given information about estimated costs for housing, meals, and other expenses in South Korea.
– Students will be expected to arrive in South Korea by late August to attend orientation and be ready to begin classes on Sept 3. Classes for the fall semester will conclude in mid-December.
– The College will select one to two students for this exchange each semester. Students should be prepared to travel by themselves.
Online applications can be accessed after February 19 at the following link: https://www.indiana.edu/~forms/coas_forms/machform/view.php?id=273017&mf_page=1
