Health is one of those things that seems to be constantly shifting and realigning. At any given time in our lives, we could be completely healthy, or we could be dealing with any number of health risks, symptoms, concerns, and treatments. Anything from common headaches and flu symptoms, to period pain and Pruritus Ani treatment, can affect anyone at any given time. It certainly seems that sickness does not discriminate, and there are some illnesses or symptoms that are unfortunately unavoidable or otherwise inevitable. One thing that most of us do have control over, however, is keeping our bodies physically healthy and mentally healthy.
Our diet has direct, fundamental effects on the chemistry of our brains – and that includes our mental health as a direct result (even the protection against mental illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease). Society has taught us that what we fuel our bodies with affects us physically, and so we have evolved into a society that is mindful in that respect of dietary effects on our health. What we eat affects our mental health and our brains – the very muscle that keeps our bodies functioning and moving properly – and so we should be more mindful than ever, as well as be taking active steps to change our diet to reflect the kind of health levels we want to ideally possess.
The food that we fuel our brains with directly shapes our thoughts, actions, and even our feelings. The food that we eat is broken down into nutrients, which is when broken down into the bloodstream and carried through the body to the brain – this is where energy is restored and cellular reactions are activated. In short, this is where and how the fabric of our brains is created. The biggest difference between the cells in the brain and the cells throughout the rest of the body is that, unlike the cells that run through the rest of the body, brain cells stay with us for the entire duration of our lives. They do not replenish, and so taking good care of them is paramount to brain health throughout our entire lifespan. Health concerns surrounding an individual’s diet are often the concerns that seem to gain the most attention, and yet they continue to be one of the biggest issues in the health world, resulting in the belief that not enough is being done to remedy the issue.
Making the conscious decision to fuel our bodies with foods that are good not only for our physical wellbeing, but for our brains, can make the world of difference. The health of our brains is crucial because the brain is the muscle that, quite literally, keeps the body functioning and moving. If we do not fuel the brain correctly, we become sluggish and frazzled. Therefore, a balanced, healthy diet should always be one of our top priorities. We only have one body, but we also only have one brain. Make it count. Fuel your body the best way you can.
