It might sound dubious, using smells to enhance health and quality of life, but fragrance oils have been utilized by numerous consumers globally. Originating from France, it was a perfumer and chemist Maurice Gattefosse who coined the term in 1937.
The science behind this unconventional therapy is the quantity of antioxidants found in the oils and how receptive the human sense of smell is. Said to be the strongest link to our collective subconscious, it is why smells can be a trigger for memories. Used correctly, it can lower stress or anxiety, arouse an individual and even promote weight loss. However, when the oils are applied directly to the skin, it latches on to body fats and enters the body’s immune system, effectively enhancing it with their high levels of antioxidants.
Peppermint oil is said to be an energy booster, mostly due to its cooling properties and sharp scent. According to US News, it can be used to control cravings. Lemon is one of the most useful fruits when it comes to weight loss. Research shows that its scent “improves the neurological activity that promotes the breakdown of body fat”. Cinnamon has also been used as an ingredient in dieting as it balances blood sugar and helps reduce cravings.
There is also another aspect to aromatherapy that goes beyond spiritual belief. There is a science to scent. All living organisms operate at electrical frequencies. Human beings operate at 62-72 Hz, and it drops when we get sick and vice versa. It fluctuates according to what the host comes in contact with. Junk food, coffee and drugs all lower the frequency of the body.
However, essential oils, which have the highest frequency known to science, can go up to 320 Hz and has the ability to affect a growth of frequency in human bodies. The argument goes that if a lowered frequency correlates with getting sick, a higher one should be beneficial to human health.
Essential oils are to plants what blood is to humans. It carries a plethora of defence mechanisms such as “the ability to destroy infections, stave off infestations, initiate and maintain growth and repair structural damage”.
Dubious scientists have tried to debunk the practise by claiming that while it is pleasurable, there is no evidence to back its medicinal values. There are suspicions that practitioners who inhale various scents for its benefits and who exhibit the effects is nothing more than a placebo phenomenon. Furthermore, the compounds in plant oils could be volatile and cause a myriad of problems for the users. Even when used in balms or lotions, they might also cause adverse effects such as swelling or rashes. The idea that plants are natural and therefore good is a misguided perspective. Let’s not forget that nature is capable to producing life threatening poisons.
As with anything, one should always do their research and make an informed decision on whether they should or should not do something. Understanding the potential risks and benefits before diving head first.
