Looking back over the years that I’ve been involved with foreign policy; I find it noteworthy that policymakers spend so much time and attention on the Middle East. It has only 3% of the world’s population and is not particularly wealthy or powerful, but the world watches and is often fixated there.
Five Hamilton Lugar School faculty members have been honored by the IU Board of Trustees with Trustees Teaching Awards for the 2020-2021 academic year. Faculty members are nominated by their department chairs or school deans for their positive impact on learning through the direct teaching of students, particularly undergraduates.
For the first time in its history, the Hamilton Lugar School’s Language Workshop will offer Hakha Lai in its upcoming summer term. Hakha Lai (pronounced Hak-HA Lai) is a language spoken in the Chin State in Myanmar and in refugee communities across the world, primarily in the United States, Norway, and Australia.

The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University has partnered with US Strategic Command (STRATCOM)—through the STRATCOM Academic Alliance—as STRATCOM organizes a series of lectures, guest speakers, and special events examining deterrence and national security challenges in the 21st century.
On March 20, people around the world and on the IU Campus will celebrate the Persian or Iranian New Year known as Navruz (or Nowruz).
The Hamilton Lugar School has more than 20 student-led groups and clubs. One of the newest is the Eleanor Roosevelt Society (ERS), which is built and centered on empowerment, inclusion, and the promotion of women in the international studies field.
