By Harry Chaubey, PhD Candidate, Music Technology
As we reach the end of April, the campus is buzzing with the familiar energy of upcoming finals next month. This period feels especially important to me because I’m nearing the final stages of my PhD journey—finishing experiments, writing my thesis, and preparing for my defense, scheduled tentatively for the end of May or early June. Balancing excitement with nervousness has become my everyday reality.
The Balancing Act: Research, Responsibilities, and Real Life
Graduate school often feels like you’re juggling multiple things at once. From intensive research tasks and job responsibilities to maintaining a personal life, it can be overwhelming. There were days filled with self-doubt and stress, but the Grad Jag community consistently provided the support and comfort I needed to get through those challenging times.
Power of Community: More Than Just Peers
As a Graduate Emissary, I witnessed the incredible resilience and unity within our graduate community. By organizing events and mentoring new students, I experienced how powerful shared experiences can be in building meaningful connections. This supportive network has been essential in keeping me motivated and hopeful, especially during tough moments.
Unique Challenges as an International Student
Being an international student adds another layer of complexity, especially when transitioning from student status to Optional Practical Training (OPT). The advisors at the Office of International Affairs have been incredibly supportive, guiding me through important decisions like when to apply for OPT and selecting the best start date. Their help has significantly eased my anxiety about immigration matters.
Taking Care of Yourself: Physical and Mental HealthT
As I approach my thesis defense, I’ve realized the importance of prioritizing my physical and mental health. Graduate school can be stressful, making it easy to neglect exercise, proper sleep, and relaxation. However, maintaining these healthy habits is crucial for productivity and overall happiness. It’s equally important to openly discuss mental health and seek help whenever needed.
Managing Time Wisely
A key lesson from my journey has been managing time effectively, especially between completing experiments and thesis writing. Allocating consistent, dedicated writing time each week has significantly reduced my stress and made the writing process smoother.
Advocating for Fellow Grad Jags
This semester, I’ve found great joy in advocating for fellow graduate students. Sometimes, simply listening to someone facing challenges can make a profound difference. Often, their experiences reflect our own struggles, reminding us how valuable support can be. Don’t hesitate to reach out and offer help—your support can be life-changing for someone.
It’s Okay to Feel
No matter what emotions you’re experiencing—negative, demotivated, overwhelmed—remember it’s completely normal and human. These feelings are just phases that will pass. Trust yourself and remember that those who truly understand you always see your real worth.
Always Have a Plan(s)
Another valuable lesson is the importance of having plans A, B, and C. Things often don’t go exactly as expected, and that’s okay. Preparing multiple plans can help reduce anxiety and ensure you’re ready to handle whatever comes next.
Finding Joy in the Present
As I prepare for my thesis defense, I’m reminded to savor the present. It’s easy to get caught up in future plans—postdocs, jobs, moving—but it’s essential to celebrate every milestone along the way. Each small success, whether it’s completing an experiment or receiving positive feedback, is a reminder of our perseverance.
Looking Ahead: A Message to Fellow Grad Jags
To students beginning their journey: embrace every challenge and seek support, as growth often comes unexpectedly. If you’re midway through: keep pushing and celebrate your progress. To those nearing graduation, take pride in your achievements and look forward to new adventures.
As we transition into the summer semester, let’s cherish the lessons learned, friendships built, and strength gained. Here’s to our incredible journey as Grad Jags!
