Last month I was in Indianapolis for a conference, and I had the opportunity to join a tour at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Now, I’ve been to the Eiteljorg in the past, and enjoyed my time there; but this particular visit was my favorite.
When it comes to romantic comedy, classic Hollywood has everybody beat. If you haven’t seen a rom-com from the 1930s, 1940s, or 1950s, you’re denying yourself one of life’s greatest joys. There are many I could recommend, but for my money, the gold standard may just be George Stevens’s The More the Merrier (1943).
Abbas Kiarostami was one of cinema’s quietest adventurers. He asked hard questions and answered them effortlessly. Can you make a film that expresses the innocence and fidelity of childhood? Man with a Movie Camera (1929) is Dziga Vertov’s most well-known film. Film schools teach it as a classic example of montage, the city film, and early documentary.
