Welcome to Score Keeping, a feature where I dive into overlooked and highly praised songs, scores and soundtracks that accompany great films. Today, however, I sit down and talk to a composer with an upcoming performance at the IU Cinema.
Upon meeting Jason Fickel you would be met by someone with an affable demeanor and a warm presence, someone that’s easy to shoot the breeze with and talk just about anything. It’s not surprising when you find out that he’s a storyteller strapped with a six-string. He’s a transplant to Bloomington, Indiana but one that’s brought a lifetime of learning and a tumbler of tales with him. He’s also a film fan, so it was a great pleasure to sit down and talk about his beginnings, his influences, and his process concerning the scoring of the landmark silent film, The Passion of Joan of Arc.
Please press play.
Jason Fickel will be performing and accompanying Carl Theodore Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 at 3:00 pm as part of the Heretics, Revolutionaries, and Reformers series. The Passion of Joan of Arc also screened in 2012 as part of the Cinema’s City Lights series.
David Carter is a film lover and a menace. He plays jazz from time to time but asks you not to hold that against him. His taste in movies bounces from Speed Racer to The Holy Mountain and everything in between.
