For the past year, Sandra, her husband Samuel, and their 11-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, his suspicious death is presumed murder and Sandra becomes the main suspect. What follows is not just an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel’s death but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of his and Sandra’s conflicted relationship.
Winner of the 2023 Palme d’Or and nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director for Justine Triet, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, and Best Editing, Anatomy of a Fall has been called one of the best films of 2023, as well as “a sharply intelligent psychological drama” by Sight & Sound, “a kind of Gone Girl in reverse” by Variety, and “an exciting step forward for a filmmaker who seems primed for greater international recognition” by the Hollywood Reporter. See it this Friday and Saturday at IU Cinema!
“Though some may come for the murder mystery, it’s Triet’s way of using that genre to get at deeper notions of love turning to hate, and tiny marital fissures that turn into chasms, that really makes this something close to an antiromantic masterpiece.” — David Fear, Rolling Stone
Anatomy of a Fall will be screened at IU Cinema on February 16 and February 17 as part of the International Art House Series.
