Still from Trim Season
A fantastic new entry in the horror genre, Trim Season follows Emma, jobless and searching for purpose, and a group of twenty-somethings from Los Angeles as they head up the coast to make quick cash trimming marijuana on a secluded farm in Northern California. Cut off from the rest of the world, they soon realize that the estate is harboring darker secrets than any of them could imagine, and it becomes a race against time for Emma and her friends to escape the dense woods with their lives.
Deemed “Suspiria by way of marijuana” and “a trippy stoner horror film that perfectly combines supernatural suspense with disturbing imagery and a dash of gore” by critics, Trim Season has also been described by its writer/director Ariel Vida as an exploration of “power and agency, friendship and loss, all through a stylized lens.” For more from Vida about her film, check out her interviews with MovieWeb, HorrorBuzz, and Breezeway Productions, all of which also include one of the stars and producers of Trim Season, Jane Badler.
Don’t miss the Midwest premiere of Trim Season this Friday, September 29, at IU Cinema!
“From Badler’s commanding performance that contributes to the uneasy atmosphere Vida expertly curates to the stomach-churning sequences of body horror, there is undeniable greatness here.” — Kyle Logan, Screen Anarchy
Still from High Tension
After Trim Season, see the other half of IU Cinema’s Gore Girls Double Feature, High Tension/Haute Tension, a New French Extremist classic from filmmaker Alexandre Aja with an infamous twist that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
In High Tension, Alex and her friend Marie travel to the country to visit Alex’s family. After they get settled in the secluded home, Alex’s parents are brutally attacked by a psychotic truck driver, who proceeds to stalk the two women. When the killer kidnaps Alex in his truck, Marie hides in the back to try and rescue her, but the bloodshed is far from over.
“Aja is clearly an immense talent to watch, as he both displays a thorough knowledge of horror tropes past and remixes them into a squirm-inducingly difficult viewing ordeal that is psychologically…satisfying.” — Anton Bitel, Projected Figures
Trim Season and High Tension will be screened at IU Cinema as a double feature on September 29 as part of the Friday Night Frights series.
