After a cartel gunman from a small Mexican town is murdered, his four-year-old son Sujo is left an orphan and in danger. Raised by his aunt in the isolated countryside amidst hardship, poverty, and the constant peril associated with his identity, Sujo grows up and attempts to make his life anew, away from the violence of his hometown. However, when his father’s legacy catches up with him, he will come face-to-face with what seems to be his destiny.
Winner of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and described by Variety as a “tense Mexican drama that plays like Boyhood, except with the son of a sicario as its subject,” Sujo was recently picked by Mexico to represent the country at the 2025 Oscars in the Best International Feature category. For more on the film, check out co-directors Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez’s brief introduction to it on YouTube as well as their interview with LRM Online.
See the film this Friday and Saturday at IU Cinema!
“A work of tremendous lyrical potency, even more intricate in meaning and scope than the pair’s earlier stunner, Sujo thunderously demonstrates why Valdez and Rondero stand among those soon to be regarded as the new masters of Mexican cinema.” — Carlos Aguilar, IndieWire
Sujo will be playing at IU Cinema on October 4 at 7pm and October 5 at 7pm as part of the New Americas Cinema series. Please note the October 5 screening will feature open captions.
