Dubbed “one of this century’s most arresting tales of female anxiety” by The New York Times and chosen earlier this year as one of Entertainment Weekly‘s 12 “small but mighty movies not to miss,” Watcher is about Julia, an American woman who moves to Romania with her husband and quickly finds herself unnerved by a man who appears to be constantly following and watching her. Is it all in Julia’s head, like her husband and the police think, or is there something more sinister at hand?
Featuring a terrific lead performance by scream queen Maika Monroe (The Guest, It Follows), Watcher is the confident, spine-tingling directorial debut of Chloe Okuno, an acclaimed new voice in horror filmmaking. To learn more about Okuno, check out her interviews with Women and Hollywood and the American Film Institute; you can also go behind the scenes of Watcher with Okuno in an exclusive article from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
We can’t wait to see you at the Cinema on October 7 for our screening of this slow-burn thriller!
“Okuno’s taut feature artfully reconstructs a Hitchcockian thriller around, yes, a blonde heroine in Monroe, but one with her own gaze and distinct anxieties.” — Jake Coyle, Associated Press
Watcher will be screened at IU Cinema on October 7 at 7 pm as part of the Friday Night Frights series.
