Deciding to go to college is a rather large decision. It takes a fair amount of preparation starting in primary school through secondary school. From picking majors to which top colleges remain options, it can be difficult to decide what to do with so many choices. College is so much more than just getting an education. College is a learning and growing life experience. It’s about growing not only academically, but personally as well. College and universities are great places to meet new people, build new friendships and relationships, and critically learn about the world around us. Higher education institutions are meant to foster minds that will continue to grow and do great things post graduation. With the right mindset, college is what an individual makes it.
Pursuing a higher educational degree can be crucial to success as an adult. Because so many jobs now require some type of degree to even get an entry level position, it’s almost as if bachelor’s degrees are the new high school diploma. For this reason, many people are now deciding to pursue a degree beyond their undergraduate years and obtain a Master’s degree or even a doctoral certification to lengthen their education and increase their salary. Generally the higher the degree, the more one is paid throughout their lifetime. With a higher degree, one has more potential to reach the top of their field becoming a well known individual in their industry. In order to be financially stable it’s also important to pursue a degree. A degree can provide a sense of financial security in life, even if it is used outside of the specified major and area of emphasis work. Aside from the financial and job security aspects of obtaining a degree, it’s also important to grow the mindset into a more well-rounded and educated person. Higher education has a dedication for critical thinking skills that reduced the amount of ignorance in a population. With critical thinking skills, an individual can push outside of the box when coming up with solutions to life’s biggest problems.
Because a degree is so crucial to a better life, many people put certain standards on obtaining their degree and this can ultimately be harmful because getting the degree shouldn’t have standards it should just have one goal, and that is to get the degree. Most bachelor degrees take around four years for a traditional degree. When students tend to take longer sometimes they are hard on themselves. A main reason a degree can take longer for some students is because they change their major. Picking a major is difficult, and sometimes it takes trying one thing to decide that it isn’t thing someone wishes to pursue which would lead them in the direction of a new career path. For this reason, students should not continually put pressure on themselves when it comes to deciding a major. The only failure that happens is quitting. As long as a student perseveres through the difficult times, there will be an outcome when graduation approaches.
