Stepping foot into the world of La Selva Biological Research Station, I was immediately captivated by the wonders of the rainforest. It was on that very first day that I encountered the leaf cutter ants, and to my surprise, I found myself deeply appreciating the rainforest at the most microscopic level. Little did I know that this encounter would become a symbol of the larger sense of community I would discover here in Costa Rica.
The leaf cutter ants, with their unwavering work ethic and cooperative lifestyle, provided me with a profound appreciation for the rainforest’s intricate web of life. Observing their relentless determination to protect their queen and sustain their colony, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the immense power that lies within a united community. These small creatures became a living testament to the strength that comes from collaboration and collective effort. As I gawked at their disciplined organization and their ability to overcome obstacles, I realized that if we all worked together with the same dedication as these ants, perhaps we could protect our matriarch—Mother Nature—ensuring a sustainable and harmonious future for generations to come.
As my journey unfolds at La Selva, I find myself immersed in a community of passionate individuals who share a common love for the environment. Despite our diverse backgrounds and experiences, the students on this trip have come together through a collective desire to make a positive impact on the world. This close-knit group of 18 students quickly became a second family—a supportive network that transcended differences in majors and upbringings. In each interaction, I witnessed the power of community as we learned from one another and started to build what I hope to be lasting connections that extend far beyond our time in Costa Rica.
One of the most remarkable aspects of a community is its ability to break down barriers and build bridges. In the midst of unfamiliar surroundings, the kindness of each individual in the group has built an environment of understanding and support, whether it be cheering each other on during presentations, checking in on each other when we’re feeling down, silently working next to each other as we write our blog posts, or simply playing a game of euchre together after a strenuous day. The genuine care and community within our group exemplifies the strength of human connection.
Just as the leaf cutter ants work diligently for the benefit of their entire colony, our collective efforts are directed towards a shared purpose—the preservation and understanding of our natural world. Engaging in thought-provoking discussions, collaborating on research projects, and exchanging ideas, we have started to expand our understanding of the environment and have begun exploring innovative solutions to environmental challenges, reminding me that when individuals come together with passion and determination they can create meaningful change.
Through my experiences thus far, I learned to appreciate not only the magnificence of nature but also the beauty of the little things. Every interaction, whether it was observing the leaf cutter ants’ hard at work or sharing a laugh with a classmate, brought me closer to the core of what truly matters. I came to realize that even the tiniest acts of kindness and connection can make a significant impact on our collective experience.
One example of this was the group presentations. Despite the inherent stress of presenting in front of others, there was an overwhelming sense of support and encouragement. Each team showcased their research projects, sharing their unique insights and ideas. It was amazing to witness the collective knowledge and passion that emerged from these presentations.
During our reflection sessions, we dove deeper into the experiences and lessons learned throughout our time at La Selva. This moment of reflection allowed us to appreciate the personal growth we have undergone and to express gratitude for the shared journey we have been on thus far.
One of the highlights of our journey has been playing card games. It’s fascinating how something as simple as a deck of cards can bring an entire group together. Whether it was a late night game of euchre or an impromptu session of Kaboom during a rainstorm, the card games provided us with moments of joy, laughter, and friendly (for the most part) competition. What struck me the most was the willingness of everyone to come together and learn new games. We shared strategies, patiently explained rules, and cheered each other on with every play. It didn’t matter if we were seasoned card players or novices. In fact, we even had the opportunity to teach a different group how to play one of our favorite games, bridging the gap between our two groups. Through the simple act of playing card games, we discovered that unity can be found in the most unexpected places, reminding us of the power of connection and the little moments that can bring people closer together.
In addition to the bonds we formed within our own group, we also had the privilege of connecting with the local community in Costa Rica. From engaging in conversations with the knowledgeable staff and tour guides at La Selva to interacting with locals during our tour days, we experienced firsthand the warmth and hospitality that permeated the Costa Rican culture. It was through these interactions that we truly understood the power of community transcending boundaries and how our shared passion for the environment could bridge gaps and create meaningful connections.
As I reflect on my time at La Selva so far, I am reminded of the interconnectedness of all living beings, just like the leaf cutter ants in the rainforest. These tiny creatures, with their selfless dedication to their colony, serve as a reminder of the potential that lies within us all. If we embrace the spirit of community, acknowledging our shared responsibility for the well-being of our planet, we can work together to protect and preserve the environment that sustains us. I am hopeful for what’s to come.
