Faculty, staff, students and the public are invited to celebrate the opening of the Johnny P. Flynn Memorial Library at University Library on Nov. 4.
Flynn, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma, was founding director of American Indian Programs at IUPUI. He died in 2012.
The collection includes scholarly monographs, memoirs, novels and other written materials that are concerned with Native American and Indigenous history. Some of the materials are drawn from Flynn’s personal collection.
“Johnny was a beloved colleague, teacher and passionate activist for American Indian affairs,” said Charmayne ‘Charli’ Champion-Shaw, director of American Indian Programs and Native American & Indigenous Studies in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. “One highlight of his leadership, and there are many, is the alliance he built for the campus with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, the only tribe with federal recognition in Indiana. We are excited that the collection named in his honor will have increased access and visibility at University Library.”
The memorial library resided in the American Indian Studies Program Office from 2012 through part of 2022. The materials were transferred under a long-term stewardship agreement between University Library and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program in the School of Liberal Arts.
Participants are asked to register to attend the opening event.
