Position Title: Qualitative Data Research Assistant

Project End Date: June 12th
Average Hours: 12 per week
Schedule: Flexible, Mon.-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

Position Description:
The Research Assistant position is an opportunity for humanities focused students to gain experience with qualitative data collection. The Research Assistant would be assisting the Humanities Librarian with collecting qualitative data and as part of a project focused on identifying minority faculty perceptions around barriers to open knowledge publishing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The applicant for this position will be transcribing interviews, running transcription software, organizing data for later analysis. Other general administrative duties may be assigned as needed, some of which may include gathering and annotating articles.
*The Research Assistant will be assigned a temporary workspace for the length of their position within the University Library, and must physically be on location to do their work.
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate level program.
- Effective communication-we will be interacting with various individuals in a face-to-face or digital environment.
- Reliable-be dependable and prepared as we will review transcriptions for accuracy and have discussions after each interview.
- Resourceful-be engaged in the information gathering and learning process, bring in your own knowledge and apply if applicable.
Desired Qualifications:
- Individuals enrolled in programs such as Library and Information Science, Social Science, History, Education, Psychology, or Communication Studies backgrounds may find this a better fit but the position is open to anyone meeting the qualifications.
- Prior experience with qualitative research methods
- Familiarity with conducting interviews
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Gained in this Role:
Communicator: the individual selected will learn a lot about conducting face-to-face interviews, and will gain practice in oratory as well as writing techniques.
Innovator: During the course of this project the individual will gain a deeper understanding of open knowledge production and understanding of why some scholars either support it or avoid it.
Additionally, the individual selected will gain firsthand experience with deploying concepts that they may have learned about in a classroom setting in a practical context.
Community Contributor: This research has a national audience and fills a major gap in within the information science field. The individual selected would be contributing to the spread of knowledge more widely.
