LabCorp Knowledge Engineering is looking for a student with an interest in helping to build capabilities and information resources into the LabCorp Knowledge Graph, currently consisting of a wiki and an R Shiny application called Compass AI. The group is part of the Center of Excellence in Data Science and Bioinformatics at LabCorp, which applies various data science disciplines (including artificial intelligence, machine learning, graph databases, statistics, bioinformatics, and natural language processing) to our clinical, operational and financial challenges, and creates opportunities to enhance the value of our offerings to our customers.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Knowledge Engineering Intern are to:
- Interact with users across the organization to identify and capture various types of knowledge
- Review documents and summarize the type of data included in the document
- Set-up and organize information flow for a wiki as a digital knowledge management repository
- Create wiki sections and populate page content relevant to the namespace being developed
- Identify opportunities to integrate resources into Compass AI and establish connections between Compass and the wiki
- Organize and transform laboratory testing information to load into the Compass AI database
- Develop gene ontology and biological pathway databases to identify laboratory testing that maps to each
- Develop scripts to automate data mapping and mining processes
- Attend routine update meetings
- Communicate summary of project outcome

- Data organization, curating, cleaning and wrangling: identify, capture and organize wiki information; build gene ontology and biological pathway databases; catalog genes/proteins for ontologies and pathways
- Platform coding: UI front-end development; system backend development to manage user queries, manipulate/integrate data, and automate updates
- Both areas: data staging, data integration, testing and troubleshooting

Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in sophomore year or higher pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or Informatics Studies
- Experience with R, R Shiny, and MySQL database queries (include your GitHub page if available)
- Good understanding of genes, proteins, pathways and ontologies
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to deal professionally with internal customers of various organizational levels
- Good organization, documentation, prioritization and scheduling skills together with an overall desire to learn
- Demonstrated potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and collaboration with others and independent thought.
- Ability to work independently and multi-task
- Ability to see the big picture and work towards that goal
- Basic problem solving and project management abilities together with a professional image
