Dear IUPUI Graduate Students and Postdocs,
IUPUI has been a leader in integrating service-learning successfully to improve student outcomes. CIRTL at IUPUI and the Center for Service and Learning (CSL) are collaborating to create professional development opportunities for IUPUI graduate students and postdocs to learn more about service-learning as a high-impact teaching and learning strategy. Service-learning is defined as “the integration of academic material, relevant community-based service activities, and critical reflection in a reciprocal partnership that engages students, faculty/staff, and community members to achieve academic, civic, and personal growth learning objectives as well as to advance public purposes” Frequently, service-learning is combined with other forms of teaching and learning including global learning, study abroad, undergraduate research and problem-based learning.
Awareness of and experience with service-learning and related community-engaged learning methods can be a valuable skill set in academic and non-academic settings. Those seeking a position a career as future faculty ca set themselves apart in the academic job market as master educators by developing expertise in service-learning as an active learning and high impact educational practice. For those seeking professional careers as, mastery of community-partnership practices, which are central to service-learning course design, are an essential skill set in stakeholder engagement and in the supervision and mentoring of student interns.
In order to develop relevant and beneficial professional development programming, we would like to learn more about your perceptions of, current experiences with, and general interests in service-learning. Towards this end, we have developed a two-part survey:
- Part 1: This section will help us learn more about your general experiences and perceptions of service-learning in higher education. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and your responses will be anonymous.
- Part 2: You will be prompted to complete Part 2 upon completion of Part 1. Let us know which dimensions of service-learning teaching topics and practices interest you. This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and your responses will be anonymous.
