Graduate students come to IUB with a wide range of instructional experience. Whatever level of teaching experience our new Associate Instructors have, we’re confident they can learn something new at our upcoming Associate Instructor Orientation (AIO) series. The CITL’s AIO will provide an overall introduction and socialization to the research-based practices and culture of teaching and learning at IUB.
While CITL staff, workshop facilitators, and graduate students typically meet in person, this year’s AIO will be held virtually in light of safety concerns. AIO will be offered as a series of webinars that will be span two weeks: August 17th – 28th. These events have participant caps that may limit student attendance at the live webinar. If your student is not able to register, they’ll be able to watch recorded versions of the webinars, which will be archived on our CITL Kaltura channel. These webinars/videos can be used as supplemental to departmental orientations for graduate students. It is not mandated by the Bloomington Faculty Council that new AIs attend, although many departments choose to make it mandatory.
Given the need for many departments to move their classes either wholly or partially online, our sessions this year include fundamental skills and innovative technology for the virtual, hybrid, and face-to-face classroom.
Have your students register for the webinars using the links below. They will need an IU username to register, so if they don’t already have one, ask them to request a guest account.

- Tuesday, August 18th, 10 AM – 11:30 AM: Teaching in an American classroom: understanding identity, empathy and healthy boundaries in the classroom

CITL’s Associate Instructor Orientation is here to introduce concepts and practices to help graduate students handle the immediate teaching needs in the first couple of weeks. After the orientation, instructors can delve further into these topics and more advanced pedagogy techniques in CITL events and learning communities that are offered year round. Graduate students can also follow a structured program designed to guide them through pedagogy and professional development by participating in CITL’s Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship Program.
