ASCS Q294: College to Career I – Explore Your Options (2 credits, pass/fail, 8 weeks, intended for freshmen and sophomores)
Course Description – Q294 helps students make informed decisions about their IU experience, their major selection and the career planning. Using formal and informal self-assessment tools, students will engage in personal self-discovery, and then through a variety of interactive experiences, will compare what they know about themselves to the academic and career landscape. Students will identify multiple majors and careers that may be satisfying choices, learn how to conduct major and career research using IU’s extensive resources, and then set actionable goals for the future.
One student said, “I thought that figuring out what my values, interests, personality and skills (VIPS) were to be very helpful in visualizing how people see me.”
ASCS Q296: College to Career II – Navigate Your Arts and Sciences Experience (2 credits, pass/fail, semester, intended for sophomores, juniors and seniors)
Course Description – Q296 is an internship, job, and graduate school prep course which helps you examine the relationship between your current field of study and life after graduation. The course invites you to leverage your unique skill set and learn to articulate the assets of an Arts and Sciences degree. Under the guidance of a Career Coach and an Academic Adviser, you will identify opportunities of interest and develop personal marketing materials (resume, cover letter, personal statements, online profiles) that target those opportunities. You will also identify skills gaps, set goals, launch a professional network, practice interviewing, and emerge ready to engage fully in your next steps. Each section presents a special academic or industry area focus, but students are welcome to join any section that fits their schedule.
