Dear Alumni and friends,
The spring semester has come to a close and we are so thankful to have been on-campus full-time and offering classes in-person this academic year.
It has been a very busy spring for us. All Indiana University campuses, including IUPUI, completed their strategic plan and this plan outlines a bold vision for 2030. The work to transition from IUPUI to IUI is continuing and there is much excitement in the air.
In the spring, the ACS National Meeting was held in Indianapolis. The department faculty, staff, and students participated in this event. The department had a table on the front porch on Georgia Street and we were able to connect with many alumni and potential students.
This year we have graduated 20 BS, 27 BA, 6 MS, and 7 PhD students. We wish them much success and congratulate them on their graduation. We hope that the experience they persevered through the past two years will make them stronger. This year one chemistry student and 10 Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) leaders were recognized as IUPUI’s ‘Top 100’ undergraduate students. One graduate student (Hannah Zimmerman-Federle) was recognized as one of the Elite 50 graduate students!
I am pleased to inform you that Drs. Frédérique Deiss and Sébastien Laulhé have been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. Dr. Yongming Deng also successfully completed his 3rd year review. We are excited to welcome Dr. Lyniesha Wright Ward to the Department as an Assistant Professor. Her research area is in chemical education and she will be joining us in the Fall of 2023.
Recently, several new grants came in which included the prestigious NSF CAREER awards to Dr. Laulhé and Dr. Deng secured a very competitive ACS PRF ND grant. In addition, the faculty collectively published 28 peer-reviewed articles in 2022.
There are many exciting things happening in our department and in our School of Science. This is your department, and because of your success, IUPUI and the department are successful. Please feel free to reach out with updates at czinski@iupui.edu, connect with us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter @ChemIUPUI or @ParthaBasu_Chem. We are always interested in learning about your whereabouts and enjoy hearing from you. Please keep us informed and visit us when you can.
The ongoing pandemic has reminded us of the value of science in our lives, and Chemistry will continue to play a central role. Very importantly, please stay safe and stay healthy.
Best regards,
Partha Basu, Ph.D.
