Dear alumni and friends,
The spring semester has wrapped up and we are officially into the first session of summer classes. We had a wonderful graduation in May, where we graduated 13 BS, 23 BA, 8 MS, and 3 PhD students. We wish our new graduates much success and congratulate them on this milestone. These students persevered through many challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are so proud of their steadfast commitment to their education.
The spring semester was very eventful. The work to transition from IUPUI to IU Indianapolis continues. We spent the past two years planning for the impending restructuring of IUPUI and the establishment of Indiana University Indianapolis. This fall we will be teaching introductory courses to both IU Indianapolis students and Purdue University Indianapolis students. Earlier this spring, we welcomed the first Chancellor for Indiana University Indianapolis, Dr. Latha Ramchand. There is much excitement in the air here on our campus.
In the spring, the ACS National Meeting was held in downtown Indianapolis. The department faculty, staff, and students participated in this event. We saw many of you at our department table on the front porch on Georgia Street. We were also able to connect with potential students and enjoyed spending time with many chemistry colleagues.
This year three chemistry students and six Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) leaders were recognized as IUPUI’s ‘Top 100’ undergraduate students. Two of our graduate students were recognized as one of the Elite 50 graduate students!
I am pleased to inform you that Dr. Ian Webb has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure to come next year. Mr. Keith Anliker was promoted to the Teaching Professor rank. After more than two decades of service, Kitty O’Doherty retired in the Spring, and we wish her a happy retirement. Dr. Tamiko Porter moved to the DC area, and we wish her well.
Our department’s success reflects your hard work and dedication. Your achievements contribute to the success of our campus, the School and the department. We encourage you to share your updates with us at inchem@iu.edu, connect with us on Facebook, or follow us on X (formerly known as Twitter) @ChemIUPUI or @ParthaBasu_Chem . Your engagement is vital to us, and we are always interested in learning about your whereabouts. Please keep us informed and visit us when you can, as your presence enriches our community.
Enjoy your summer!
