Guest blog submitted by Kira Wiseman. Kira is a recent graduate of the B.S. Environmental Science program. Kira helps in data entry and water sampling processes in order to facilitate cyanobacteria research.
Essential research is being conducted in Indiana, amongst other states, to better understand cyanobacteria species and what causes the production of cyanotoxins. The research helps to address particular issues, such as how cyanotoxins’ effects can and do harm human and wildlife health. (more…)

Guest blog submitted by Meera M. Patel. Ms. Patel is a rising senior at Fishers High School, a High Honor Roll student and a Project STEM intern. This summer, Ms. Patel is researching Combined Sewage Overflows, assisting with community based research and spending some of her time interning with Amber Rollings at CEES.
Reconnecting to Our Waterways (ROW) is a grassroots level enterprise established in 2012, which has a main goal to develop a sense of unity among neighborhoods by promoting cohesive and community- based change in six major Indianapolis waterways as well as in the neighborhoods surrounding them. These waterways include Eagle Creek, Fall Creek, Pleasant Run, the White River, Pogue’s Run, and the Central Canal. These particular waterways were chosen due to their existing community and engagement network. (more…)

CEES researchers (and IUPUI Department of Earth Sciences faculty) Dr. Lixin Wang and Dr. Pierre-Andre Jacinthe and postdoctoral researcher Dr. Stefani Daryanto published a new paper this month, “Global synthesis of drought effects on food legume production,” in the journal PLOS ONE. Wang et al.’s focus on legumes is of particular importance due to these protein rich (and tasty) Fabaceae family members being major players for food security for the developing world as well as gaining popularity from increasing healthy-eating-style dieting trends. Thanks to a dissemination grant from the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning, researchers Jennifer Nelson, Jessica Davis, and Sarah Goss from IUPUI’s Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) and the Department of Earth Sciences attended the 6th International Symposium on Service Learning (ISSL) at the University of Indianapolis. The Discovering the Science of the Environment education staff enjoyed investigating Pogue’s Run with the 5th grade students at Paramount School of Excellence this month. The stretch of stream under study is located between Spade’s Park and Brookside Park on Indy’s near eastside, adjacent to the students’ school. (more…)
