Our last service learning project of the Fall semester took place at Felege Hiywot Center near downtown Indianapolis. This site was the focus of the Youth Farm Initiative as well as other CEES projects and the gardens needed to be prepared for winter.

National Association of State Boards of Geology IUPUI Tour
On November 14 geologists from the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) visited Indianapolis to participate in a daylong field trip lead by Professional Geologist, Jim Nowacki.

Fishback Creek
We had the pleasure of resurveying a portion of Fishback Creek this week. A cross-section was surveyed and the bedload sediment was sampled as part of a field exercise in fluvial sediment transport being conducted by Dr Kathy Licht’s G334 SedStrat class.
Service Learning: Holliday Park
Service learning on October 24th took place at Holliday Park on the north side of Indianapolis. This project was done in conjunction with Don Miller, Land Stewardship Manager for Indy Parks.
IUPUI Sustainability Day
Sustainability Day at IUPUI, part of the Campus Sustainability Day movement, was held October 22 at Campus Center. Campus Sustainability Day is a nationally-celebrated tradition since October 2003, and it is held annually on the 4th Wednesday of October at colleges and universities across the United States.
Fall Service Learning Underway
This semester we have scheduled thirteen projects which will serve up to 350 students. We have six sites of interest in and around Marion County. Eagle Creek, Marott Park, and Southeastway Park have alredy taken place with a great turnout!
School Branch Update
In August we wrote that we were making significant progress on the Starkey Farms Edge of Field sampling, and the School Branch National Water Quality Initiative. Shortly after that post we identified some additional funding needs that slowed our progress.
Edge of Field Project Starting Soon
A new project is getting ready to start at CEES: Edge of Field. Led by Dr. Pierre-Andre Jacinthe of the IUPUI Department of Earth Sciences, Edge of Field is designed to determine whether improvements in water quality can be achieved by altering farm management practices (like fertilizer application) at Starkey Farms in Hendricks County.
