Have used clothing that is ready for a second home? Spare it from the landfill and help the environment while helping a local cause.
CEES is hosting a clothing drive starting this Monday in coordination with IUPUI’s Earth Week Celebration and the Indianapolis Refugee Program coordinated by Catholic Charities. According to the EPA, only 15% of clothing thrown away was recycled in 2010. That means that US landfills grew by 126 million cubic yards of clothing! Last year, over 450 refugees were relocated to Indianapolis last year. Refugees are defined by the United Nations as persons “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, [that are] outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such a fear, is unwilling to avail [themselves] of the protection of that country.” The refugee program run by Catholic Charities serves and respects refugees of all faiths.
Donating your clothes for reuse will lower your own environmental footprint by keeping your used goods out of our landfills and will lower our new residents’ footprints by reusing instead of buying new. Help the environment while helping our new neighbors.
Clothing of all sizes, including kid’s sizes, will be accepted. Be on the lookout for donation boxes in the following buildings:
