Finding a Part-Time Job
By Pat Donahue
One of the key responsibilities of the Career Development Center (CDC) is to help students find part-time jobs both on campus and off-campus. During Welcome Week, the CDC hosted the Part-time Jobs Fair, which was attended by over 3,000 students.
Those 3,000 students must have heard of the top five benefits of a part-time job:
Now that you are convinced of the benefits of a part-time job, here’s how you go about finding one:
You can always schedule an appointment with your assigned Career Advisor to talk about your part-time job search, internship search and help with building your resume. You will find their information listed in your MYJOBS account. Students who have questions about the part-time job search can also come to drop-in advising at the Career Development Center (625 North Jordan) from 1-4PM, Monday through Friday.

Hoosiers, meet Sophia Stockamp!
She’s a senior here at IUB majoring in Psychology and minoring in Social Science and Medicine. As a senior, Sophia has been involved in various organizations on campus and currently is a server at The Tap. Being a server allows her to communicate with customers and get to know them. Sophia loves being able to make “unique and personal connections” with those she servers. Not to mention as an extrovert, it’s her perfect fit!
The position of server develops many skills; however, the most predominant skills Sophia feels she is improving are her teamwork, personal motivation, active listening, communication, and service orientation (actively looking for ways to help others).
“All of [these] skills contribute to a strong work ethic that is geared toward customer service and allows me to work well in team environments,” Sophia said.
And while right now she is busy with school and making sure her customers are happy, Sophia told us that she dreams of being a psychologist in a private clinic. After graduation she sees herself attending grad school, hopefully somewhere in Colorado, or entering a customer service position.
Sophia, we have no doubt that your dreams will come true. Good luck!

Emily Snyder is junior studying Arts Management in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Emily works for the Children’s Place over at College Mall as a sales associate. She feels that while she is gaining many valuable skills, time management and multi-tasking.
“At The Children’s Place, we handle customer service all while doing daily shipment, restocking/organizing the floor, doing reports so corporate can check our numbers, etc. It’s all about time management and multi-tasking to ensure everything gets done on a day to day basis,” Emily said.
Consequently, Emily would love to manage musicians in the pop and country music industries! So those time management and multi-tasking skills will be especially helpful in staying on top of everything that is going on on-stage, back stage, behind the scenes, in the office, and anything else that comes with management.
After graduation she is hoping to move to Nashville, TN, or New York and manage a tour!
Good luck, Emily!

Back in Business
By Pat Donahue
When I am meeting with exploratory students to discuss their careers, students will often say they want a career in business.
What exactly does that mean?
Business careers are available in all industries and not just with Fortune 500 or for-profit companies. Government agencies and non-profits offer business careers. Yes, managers are called administrators and profits are called surplus, but many of the skill sets needed for business success are transferrable among industries and sectors of the economy.
Although IU students often associate business careers with the Kelley School of Business and their majors and minors, career opportunities in business are also associated with majors that are not housed in Kelley, so it’s important University Division students learn about these majors and minors as well.
Some, but not all, of these majors include Economics; Advertising; Public Relations; Healthcare Management and Policy; Sports Marketing & Management; Apparel Merchandising & Interior Design; Informatics; Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management; and SPEA majors focused on Management, Finance, and Human Resources.
Some of these majors are more “generalist”, focusing on specific skills sets and knowledge applied to multiple industries, such as accounting or advertising. Other majors are more “specialist”, focusing on a particular industry, such as healthcare or sports. Many majors are a hybrid both.
In order to educate students on these many opportunities, the Career Development Center is coordinating the program Back in Business: Majors and Minors for Students interested in Business Careers from 6PM-8PM on Tuesday, October 18 in the IMU Frangipani Room.
The first part of Back in Business will be a panel discussion with representatives who will answer the following questions:
The second part of Back in Business is an information fair format in which each School will be provided a table. The following Schools will be represented at Back in Business: College of Arts & Sciences; Kelley School of Business; School of Public Health; School of Informatics & Computing; and the School of Public & Environmental Affairs. Admissions officers, academic advisors, and career advisors will be available to answer questions about majors, minors, and certificates in those Schools.
Here is just a sample of majors that will be represented:
Take care of your business and attend Back in Business: Majors and Minors for Students interested in Business Careers from 6PM-8PM on Tuesday, October 18 in the IMU Frangipani Room.

Sophomore Morgan Farrell is a Linguistics major who works for the Spruce Residence Hall at their Center Desk. For Morgan, one of her favorite parts of the job is getting to know those who live near her. Not only is she meeting more people but she enjoys “helping others and making their day just a little bit easier,” ‘cause that’s what her job is all about. Because of the one-on-one interaction, Morgan is developing her communication and multi-tasking skills. But more than just her people skills, she is honing her judgement and decision making skills, too.
Working at Spruce’s Center Desk, Morgan knows her transferable skills will help her with her future job. Communication, Morgan says, is essential to having a professional team work effectively and efficiently. And most jobs will require multiple levels of involvement at the same time! So yeah, Morgan is sharpening some essential skills for later in life.
After graduation, Morgan is planning on going to grad school! But after grad school, her dream would be to “work as a software developer, developing accessible and affordable language learning programs.” Morgan is very interested in the Arabic language and hopes to be developing software specifically for Arabic in the next 10 years.
Morgan is pretty dang awesome so we’re pretty sure she’ll do great! Good luck, Morgan!
