Name: Megan Everett
Year + Major: Junior + Media Advertising with a specialization in Public Relations
Part-time Job + Company: WonderLab Science Museum
What do you like about your job? I love that WonderLab is actually teaching me skills that I will use out in the real world. I’m not doing the typical “intern work” or being a coffee runner. I am involved in projects within the museum which is really cool seeing your work and ideas being executed in a larger scheme.
What transferable skills are you gaining? Personal Development, Multi-Tasking, Monitoring (self, others, or situations), Judgement & Decision Making, Organizational skills, Interpersonal skills, Planning, Project Management
Why do you suggest other students get part-time jobs while at school? It’s beyond just looking good on a resume. You really find out if this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. If you wait until after you graduate to experience it, it may be to late.
Post-graduation Plans: I would either like to working in the marketing department for a non-profit or for an athletic team or I would like to work at a large public relations agency.

Getting involved in a club or volunteering either on or off campus is a huge part of feeling a part of the community at IU Bloomington. It takes initiative for sure and the benefits are huge. So how do you go about getting involved?
First, be sure to check out BeINvolved under the Division of Student Affairs and search through events, clubs, and organizations on campus that are of interest to you. Chances are you’ll be able to find “your people” or “your tribe,” as some say, when you connect with those who share similar interests.
Second, look over all of the various volunteer opportunities on campus and in the community. Community engagement in the way of volunteering also helps you feel a part of the IU Bloomington community and is not only a great way to give of yourself but also a wonderful way to make new friends and network within the community.
What you have to offer to a group and contribute to the overall community at IU and in Bloomington is unique and what will make your time here at IU full of purpose and give you a greater sense of belonging. Take the next step, show initiative, and push through any discomfort in trying something new—you and others will benefit from taking this stretch to connect! The more involved you get, the better connected you will be, and the more involved you will want to be!
