Careerlaxing
By: Pat Donahue
You have worked hard on midterms, papers, and presentations.
You have plodded through another dismally grey, sopping wet, and bitterly cold Indiana winter.
Whether you are headed home or traveling to sunny shores for spring break, you just want to chillax.
But suppose you used just a little of that extra spring break time for career planning?
You would be careerlaxing.
Here’s three actions for careerlaxing:
- Update your resume
When was the last time you updated your resume? If you want to see a sample resume for different majors at IUB, go to https://cdc.indiana.edu/majors/index.html , scroll down, and click on the sample resume link for each major. This is a very cool feature.
To see the Career Development resume handout, go to https://cdc.indiana.edu/documents/interactive-resume.pdf.
When you get back to Bloomington, have your career coach or a Career Peer review your resume before you apply to summer jobs.
- Search for a summer job or internship
Although it does not feel like it yet, classes end the first week of May and you should be looking for a summer job or internship. The Summer Job and Internship Fair is on Tuesday, March 26 from 4-7PM in Alumni Hall of the IMU.
Before that date arrives, take a break from Netflix and go to https://cdc.indiana.edu/step-four/index.html to learn how to search for a summer or part-time job.
- Research careers online and network through informational interviewing
If you have an idea what type of career you want to pursue, spring break is a great time to research careers and conduct informational interviews with professionals in careers you are considering. You can conduct informational interviews with IU alumni, professionals in your home town, or family friends. You can meet in person, over the phone, or chat through social media.

Have a safe and fun spring break chillaxing and careerlaxing.
