Good afternoon, IU! We hope your Wednesday is going well! Today’s #WorkingWednesday is not our typical post. Today’s post is about how working a part-time job lead one former student to change his major and begin his career before he had graduated!
Originally from Bedford, Ind., Josh Hays came to Bloomington thinking he would pursue a degree in music. He had loved music his whole life and hoped to make a career out of it! He also had been working alongside school his whole life, and it felt like a natural thing to continue once he got to IU.
However, Josh discovered that finding a part-time job he enjoyed was difficult. Like most IU students, Josh found himself perusing the shops on Kirkwood. One shop in particular: Urban Outfitters. Here Josh honed his sense of style and before he knew it, customers were asking him where things were because it looked like he belonged. This lead to a long game of telephone with the manager of the store, which ultimately lead to Josh being hired!
Working at Urban Outfitters really opened Josh’s eyes to the various different career paths in front of him. After a few conversations with his academic adviser and manager, Josh changed his major to Retail Management and got promoted to the position Team Manager!
From his part-time job, Josh got hands on experience in the retail world and discovered his passion for the fashion industry. He is currently waiting to hear back for another promotion and is excited about his prospects.
Josh’s whole life changed because of his part-time job in college. Maybe yours could, too!
Good luck, Josh! We can’t wait to see what your future holds.
