Claressa Shields – who we wrote about recently here in the context of a feature length documentary being made about her by Drea Cooper, Zackary Canepari, and Sue Johnson – has won the gold medal at the Olympics in the middleweight division, defeating Nadezda Torlopova of Russia and becoming the second youngest gold medalist in Olympic boxing (men’s or women’s), and the inaugural women’s middleweight champion.
From ESPN.com:
The 17-year-old Shields shuffled, danced and slugged her way past her 33-year-old opponent, showing off the free-spirited style and brute strength that made her unbeatable at the London Games.
Shields even stuck her tongue out at Torlopova after ducking a few punches in the final round.”
Here’s a longer story in the Detroit Free Press (with a cool video), and here’s the link to the the T-REX documentary trailer and kickstarter campaign.
Good stuff Claressa!
