Hearing Radmilla, a documentary film about Radmilla Cody, will be showing at the IU Cinema this Saturday (March 3rd) at 3 p.m. From the IU Cinema release:
Growing up in Navajo Nation, Radmilla Cody was tormented by others due to her mixed Native- and African-American heritage. In her early twenties, Cody entered the Miss Navajo Nation competition, showcasing her fluency in Diné and expertise in traditional Navajo skills. Her election as the first bi-racial Miss Navajo Nation was fraught with controversy. A few years later an abusive relationship with a drug dealer led to her indictment in federal court. Documentary filmmaker Angela Webb follows Cody as she overcomes adversity and eventually finds solace through music.
Director Angela Webb will be present for a reception and discussion at the BFC/A after the film.
The event is sponsored by the Native American Graduate Student Association, IUSA, the First Nations Educational and Cultural Center, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs, the Department of American Studies, the Department of Anthropology, the IU Cinema and the BFC/A.
In 2010, Cody was featured in ’50 Great Voices’ by NPR.
