A Note from Amy Serrano, Director of The Sugar Babies

By way of this note, I share that effective September 1, 2010, Sugar Babies will be exclusively distributed via Films for the Humanities and Sciences/ Films Media Group [FMG]. They will handle all non-theatrical distribution for film including electronic downloads [ finally available ]. FMG has a very prestigious catalog of films and programming and represent the world’s most prominent production companies including: the BBC, HBO, PBS, ABC News, CBC, Bill Moyer’s Public Affairs Television, National Film Board of Canada, and hundreds of independent filmmakers. As the largest educational distributor in North America, they are a good representative for our project. Royalties will be sent to The Hope, Courage and Justice Project and will be applied to the continuity of its mission.
Films Media Group has also expressed written interest in exclusively representing a “possible” forthcoming project from HCJ.  More news may follow…
Sugar Babies is in their hands and may it continue to be used as an advocacy tool to understand and eradicate human trafficking, all forms of modern day slavery, and serve to create a better way of life for Haitian families on sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic.
On that note, I am pleased to share that tonight [and August 1st] the film will air on PBS in the Washington D.C./ Virginia markets.
Also as of tonight, we happily confirm a live film screening in Montreal at the FOFA GALLERY at Concordia University on August 12th at 9pm in the Courtyard [in case of rain, auditorium will be used].  The Montreal screening will take place in conjunction with the FOFA gallery’s exhibit revisiting sugar’s history and its relationship to slavery, colonization, as well as its contemporary relationship to human trafficking and modern day forms of slavery.
The film is also slotted to be screened live during the Human Aid Film Festival, and in the cities of Vienna, Cologne, Berlin and Hamburg next October/ November, and we are in talks with a human rights organization in Dublin for a Winter film screening and question and answer session on human trafficking.
From royalties of film distribution, HCJ hopes to continue annual weekend relief missions to people on the field till it is no longer necessary. May that time not be too far away.
