This week IU hosted its’ first Chalk Art Festival on campus, and it was a great way to showcase the arts outside in the beautiful fall weather. This event was creative, and it provided connection, community, and joy for everyone in that space, which was cool to experience. My favorite aspects of the event were definitely the art, but also the Doodle Station and seeing everyone’s reaction.
During the festival, there were many professional and amateur artists creating works of art along the outside of the Showalter Fountain. As someone who has always admired chalk art, but has never seen a professional piece done in person, it was cool to go to the event and experience this art form firsthand.
Also, at the Doodle Station, people who were walking by and wanted to participate could grab chalk and create art on the pavement for themselves. I think this was a great touch to the event because it allowed everyone to engage in the same activities as the artists and have something as their own. It was also nice to see their faces as they doodled because they really seemed to enjoy it. Moreover, people passing by who may not have had time to chalk were still able to look at the art on the ground, and as they walked by, I could see that many of them enjoyed what was happening.
Overall, this was a great event. It was nice to bring people together over art, provide a way to be connected, and create a sense of community in a time where connection is scarce. Being able to witness the creation of art, and also the joy that followed from those that participated, as well as those that observed, was fun to experience.
