Creating anything that is highly influenced by the current moment is significant because it is a way to preserve the thoughts, the feelings, and the events that are happening now. It provides a picture of today, no matter how big or small, and it is always good for future reflection. I think documentation of this global moment is quite necessary because it can be very impactful and help preserve the stories that exist. One way to do this is through art, no matter the medium.
I think in times when things are so uncertain and traumatic for so many people, it’s important to fully process what is happening. Naturally, people may process or address issues in an artistic way as a method to deal with the emotions of a hard situation. In some cases, artistic expression can perfectly convey how we feel without saying a word. For example, visual art can voice so much through color, texture and lines. In the same vein, turning to a poem or a song that speaks to the soul is a way we can deal individually. Art is a place for self-expression and self-awareness, and when we look back at this time years in the future, it may give light as to how we handled this moment.
Along with expressing the self on an individual level, I think artistic expression also helps us process as a collective as we think about what’s happening globally. Being able to have curated conversations, or creating work that has a social justice commentary component to it, allows us to think deeper about the matter. It allows us to think about possible solutions and, at the very least, be a support system to each other.
