For years, I’ve been a fan of NPR Music’s approach to music journalism. From Tiny Desk Concerts to All Songs Considered, NPR Music creates interesting content that features artists from a wide range of genres, popularity, and audiences. With that said, my Student Pick is NPR’s List of Virtual Concerts. This is a comprehensive list of streamed concerts that is updated daily by NPR staff. It is organized by genre and includes everything from pop to Afro-Fusion!
After looking through the list last week, I decided to watch Soccer Mommy’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert. For those who are unfamiliar, Tiny Desk Concerts are usually recorded at a desk in NPR’s D.C. headquarters. However, due to the Coronavirus, they are unable to film at the office. Tiny Desk Concert creator, Bob Boilen said: “It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.” I am impressed by the industry’s ability to pivot on such short notice and am grateful for programming like Tiny Desk Concerts which will continue to release videos for us to enjoy while at home.
Now more than ever, it is important to support musicians and organizations who are providing us with entertainment and comfort in these uncertain times. If at all possible, I encourage you to directly support artists by buying music, merchandise, or by donating to artist relief efforts such as the Indiana Music Industry Relief Fund by Bloomington’s own Midway Music Speaks.
