Opening its doors as the first dorm on campus in 1924, Ralph L Collins Living-Learning Center has been a staple at IU for the last 95 years. It was originally the Men’s Residence Center but was later turned into the Collins Living-Learning Center in 1972, making it one of the first places of its kind in the whole country. Collins is all about student empowerment and encouraging everyone to excel in all areas of their college careers. It has been an inspiration to many and is what lots of students love to call home.
In the past school year, our Collins Historian put a huge project in motion to get a historical marker for the dorm. Now a year later, we are finally receiving the marker, making it the only student proposed historical marker to be put in on the IU campus! In celebration of this great achievement and all the amazing history in Collins, we will be holding a Historical Marker ceremony!
Having lived in Collins for the past two years, I know that this is a well-deserved marker. Collins LLC has had so much impact on so many students at IU for the last 47 years since it became a living-learning center. Many people have formed lasting friendships here, some people have even met their life partners! There is a lot to unpack about how wonderful Collins is and it would take many more posts to fit it all. No matter when someone lived here, they will always be a Collinsite at heart. Many alumni come back often and reminisce with the current students. They share their stories of all the fantastic experiences they had at Collins, some of which are posted on the Collins LLC Instagram. You could hear these stories and meet past Collins students at the Historical Marker event!
This Friday, October 25th, Collins will be honored for all its achievements. There will be lots of food, live music, crafts, a bonfire, and much more! Come join in the celebration starting at 3 pm in the Edmondson Formal Lounge!
