For my first student pick ever, I wanted to start with something that relates to my major: Open Studios 2019 on October 11th, this Friday. This event is an annual celebration of the arts that allows students to get a behind the scenes look at the different areas in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design. Unlike other art events that just show off the great work created by students, we encourage everyone to participate and learn about the process of the many techniques taught here at IU.
During this event, there will be three facilities open to the public, the first one being Kirkwood Hall. Off S. Woodlawn Ave, this building holds the Apparel Merchandising, Architecture, Comprehensive Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, RSO and DSSO areas. They will be open from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. In the Fine Arts Building next to Showalter fountain, Creative Core, Digital Arts, Fibers, FoA Bookshop, Graphic Design, Grunwald Gallery, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, and Photography have some awesome activities for everyone! This building is open from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Lastly, the Studio Arts Annex, off 13th, holds the Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture areas. This building will be open from 7:30 – 9:30 pm.
There is obviously a lot to explore during this event, so how could anyone choose where to start? I would say start with the area you are most interested in, such as Painting. As a painting student, I hope to see a lot of people in our area. In the past, they have held live figure drawing sessions and have even had one of the professors be painted on! The activities are somewhat like the ones featured during our First Thursday events, but they are more specific to the areas of art that are featured.
I can remember when I have attended in the past and how informative the experience was. A lot of people don’t know about how all these techniques work and the diverse strategies people use to achieve their finished products. It’s really inspiring to see all the artists at IU show off their passions and encourage others to learn and create! If you ever feel like it’s hard to get into making art, this event is a great way to spark your imagination! No matter what your major or interests are, there is something for everyone during Open Studios. So, stop by and support your local art students, make some cool art pieces, and learn about all the wonderful opportunities the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design has to offer IU and the Bloomington community.
Also don’t forget to use #iuopenstudios while at the event to share all the amazing things you discover!
