A new edition of Dr. William L. Yarber’s widely-used college textbook, Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary Society, was recently published. Yarber is Provost Professor at IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, Senior Director of the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, and the Senior Scientist at the Kinsey Institute. The textbook is co-authored by Barbara Sayad, a recently retired professor at California State University Monterey Bay.
It’s the 10th edition of the textbook, which is used in over 300 colleges and universities nationwide and has also experienced widespread international use. The textbook affirms sexuality and encourages students to become proactive in their sexual well-being while emphasizing the importance of embracing intimacy, pleasuring, and mutual satisfaction and consent in sexual expression. In addition, it strives to represent the contemporary, diverse society students encounter both inside and outside the classroom.
Dr. Yarber, who received his doctorate from Indiana University, has authored or co-authored over 160 scientific reports on sexual risk behavior and AIDS/STD prevention in professional journals. He also authored the first AIDS prevention curriculum for secondary schools in the U.S. and has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization Global Program on AIDS.
