To our nearly 4,000 students, IU Northwest is more than simply a place to study, learn or earn a college degree.
To our students, we are the place where minds are enriched; support and career networks are formed; potential is unleashed; and confidence is built.
We are proud to be IU in Northwest Indiana and leaders in advancing the educational, civic and economic well-being of this region, particularly for our students, our future leaders.
But so often for our students, achieving success comes with many barriers and obstacles. Those big, bold dreams, like that of becoming a teacher, a nurse, an accountant or a social worker, are cut short.
It is not for a lack of will or drive that our students in good academic standing must discontinue enrollment, but, in many cases, because they lack the funds, the resources and the experiences to help them navigate their academic experiences. As consequence, the need to work at hourly jobs crowds out time and resources that could be devoted working toward a Bachelor’s degree.
Having spent my entire professional career at, mostly, urban universities, I am all too aware of this reality.
And, here at IU Northwest, more than 70 percent of IU Northwest students receive financial aid, nearly half of whom receive some form of gift aid.
But with a little help, whether through family, friends, faculty or philanthropic donors, our students’ ambitions are transformed into realities, through the financial and academic support that they receive.
When there is scholarship support, our students’ worries and concerns can be quickly transformed into opportunities, inspiration, empowerment, and gratitude.
That is why scholarship support, both institutional and from private, philanthropic sources, is essential to the success and vitality of our students and campus.
I firmly believe we all are, and can be, philanthropists. We each have time, talent and treasure to contribute to the people and causes that are most important to us.
My wife Pamela and I give to IU Northwest because we care deeply about the future of higher education. We give because we understand the need among our region’s students. We give because we know and see the impressive impact.
So during this season of giving and reflection, please remember the tremendous impact that your generosity can have, not only on a student but on the vitality of this region.
It is because of your generosity that IU Northwest will continue to be the place that shapes productive community leaders, the campus that ignites knowledge and creativity, and the institution with the passion, talent, and will to develop solutions that build a smarter, healthier region.
