Rebecca Carl is the associate vice president and chief of staff for the Office of the Vice President for Engagement. As the former chief marketing and community relations officer for Clarian Health Partners, Carl has extensive experience in strategic planning and communications, marketing, branding, market research, business development, and management.
At Clarian she provided corporate oversight in the marketing and corporate communications areas, as well as health promotions, events, and public and community relations. Prior to joining Clarian, she was director and then vice president of marketing and communications at Arnett Health System in Lafayette. She was also associate director of South Bend’s Madison Center and Hospital, which is the largest provider of behavioral health services in Indiana, and director of business development and marketing at the Center for Behavioral Health in Bloomington.
As part of the IU Office of Engagement team, Carl manages the strategic plan for implementing and expanding the university’s economic development activities, as well as directing operations and communications. She serves as the office’s liaison with members of the public and private sectors and with university researchers.
“The goal of the Office of Engagement is to ensure that IU is a primary driver of economic development in Indiana,” says Carl. “My charge is to facilitate that process through strategic planning and communications with all the constituents who have a role in leveraging IU’s assets to create companies, new projects, and services based on IU research and discoveries.”
She notes that IU’s strategic plan for engagement grew out of a series of statewide forums and interviews with community leaders to consider ways in which IU could contribute to the state’s economic development. “Our office is now fully staffed,” she says, “and we are continuing to work with community leaders throughout the state to create collaborations and partnerships that benefit both IU and the citizens of Indiana.”
A graduate of Indiana State University, Carl also holds an MBA degree from Butler University. She is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (Health Academy), the American Marketing Association, and Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation. She also serves on the boards of the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) and the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana and is a former board member of the American Heart Association (Indianapolis Chapter). She has won a number of awards for outstanding marketing campaigns and products.
In addition to her appointment with the Office of Engagement, Carl holds an associate faculty position in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.
