Four Indiana University researchers – one on the Bloomington campus, three at the School of Medicine – are among 12 life sciences professionals highlighted in a report, “Profile of Money, Molecules and Management” published by BioCrossroads.
The recognized researchers are:
- Richard DiMarchi, Indiana University-Bloomington.
“I’m having a helluva lot of fun,” DiMarchi said. “I feel as if we’re making a difference scientifically and I just have my fingers crossed that these lead drug candidates really live up to expectations.”
- Mark Kelley, Indiana University School of Medicine
“I’m still doing basic science down in the weeds,” Kelley said, “but we’re always looking out of the corner of our eye [thinking], ‘Is this [research] applicable in cancer?’ As new things come along you think, ‘How can I work and put that together to make it better?’ A lot of people now think that way. You have to think that way.”
- Bruce Molitoris, Indiana University School of Medicine
“The days of the one-hitter, doing something and then moving on, are gone,” Molitoris added, “and if you really want to translate, it’s many years of moving forward. People pick up the baton, so to speak, and move it forward.”
- Anantha Shekhar, Indiana University School of Medicine
“We want to reach for something bigger and make a difference,” Shekhar said. “In that sense it inspires people. It makes people think beyond their own project in their own labs. I think that’s probably going to be the biggest gain.”
