Who hasn’t heard of Mahatma Gandhi’s words ‘It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver?’ What is health, and is health really wealth?
The World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Health implies the optimal mental and physical condition of the human being, constantly adjusting and adapting to environment change. Wealth means something that is materially, spiritually or metaphorically valuable.
Health is indeed wealth. Nothing in life is more valuable than good health. Good health contributes to emotional well-being and happiness, even in a person with limited financial means. On the other hand, a sick person can neither enjoy happiness, peace and success, nor the pleasures of wealth.
Health depends on an array of factors such as adequate sunlight, fresh air, healthy food, disciplined sleeping habits and clean water.
Sunlight is crucial to health as it is the main source of Vitamin D to our body. Vitamin D deficiencies can result in cardiovascular diseases, cancer, severe asthma in children, and cognitive impairments in the elderly, and skin disorders. While skin conditions can be remedied with measures such as Berlet Plastic Surgery, prevention is still the best cure.
Fresh or cool and unpolluted air is necessary for good health. Fresh air strengthens the immune system by increasing the oxygen content in the blood, thereby helping the white blood cells to fight disease-causing micro-organisms. The only way to enjoy fresh air is to spend time outdoors; the indoors and air-conditioned offices are a recipe for stale air.
Cleanliness begins at home. The use of clean and pure drinking water in the household cannot be emphasized enough as impure and dirty water is the root cause of water-borne ailments. It is important to bathe twice a day, clean the hands with soap before a meal and keep the house and surroundings clean.
Healthy food is a pre-requisite to good health and nutrition. A balanced and nutritious diet aids proper growth of the body. Green vegetables, fruits and salads should be an indispensable component of every meal. Green vegetables are a source of vital nutrients and fiber-rich foods such as whole grain wheat and bran rice, which enhance the digestive system.
Sports counts among the best ways of keeping the body and mind in fine fettle. There are different kinds of physical activities, ranging from walking and jogging to yoga and aerobics. After all, ‘A sound mind in a sound body’ is the means to holistic development of the human personality.
There is a direct relationship between adequate sleep and well-being. The US-based National Institute of Health recommends 7-8 hours of sleep each night and emphasizes the importance of a consistent sleep schedule, a conducive sleep environment and abstinence from large meals before bedtime.
To conclude, each one can aspire to attain a basic level of health by taking charge of his own life and mastering his circumstances.
